Senior Advocate DLN Rao, Key Figure in Namma Metro Litigation, Dies

Senior Advocate DLN Rao, a veteran member of the Karnataka Bar and one of India's leading experts in mining law, passed away on Monday. His death has left a void in the legal fraternity, with the cause of death not yet disclosed. His funeral is scheduled for the same day.

Rao, a designated Senior Advocate of the Karnataka High Court, had over five decades of experience. He was widely known for his extensive practice before both the Karnataka High Court and the Supreme Court, with a particular focus on mining, land acquisition, infrastructure, and public law.

One of his most notable contributions was his involvement in the litigation surrounding Bengaluru's Namma Metro project. In 2010, the Karnataka High Court appointed him as amicus curiae—an independent advisor to the court—in proceedings related to the proposed underground Metro stretch between Vidhana Soudha and the High Court through Cubbon Park.

The court sought his assistance given the project's wider implications. While assisting the court, Rao raised concerns about the trees that would be cut and the use of ancillary buildings. Ultimately, the High Court permitted the underground project but imposed safeguards concerning land restoration and the protection of the city's green cover.

Rao was reportedly active in key legal matters until his death. He will be remembered for his significant contributions to the legal profession and to public infrastructure development in Karnataka.
