Seoul Activists Rally Against US-South Korea-Japan Freedom Edge Drills

Anti-war activists gathered outside the U.S. Embassy in Seoul on Monday to voice their opposition to the five-day Freedom Edge military exercise involving South Korea, Japan, and the United States. The trilateral drills commenced the same day in waters near South Korea's southern Jeju Island.

Protesters carried signs reading "No US-ROK-Japan war drills" and "Stop Freedom Edge," criticizing the exercise as a destabilizing force in the region. Choi Euna, Secretary General of the Korea Peace Solidarity for Sovereignty & Reunification, stated that the exercise is ultimately aimed at pressuring and containing China. She expressed concern that such maneuvers intensify tensions and conflict among neighboring countries.

South Korea's military has defended the exercise, describing it as defensive in nature and designed to bolster a joint response capability against North Korean nuclear threats. The drills involve key maritime and aerial assets from all three nations.

However, demonstrators argue that North Korea is being used as a pretext to pursue deeper trilateral military integration aimed at containing China. They contend the drills heighten friction across East Asia.

The protest comes amid heightened rhetoric. Last week, North Korea's Foreign Ministry accused the U.S. of expressing a more confrontational posture, citing the Freedom Edge exercise and reported U.S. comments on denuclearization. This follows the recent conclusion of the annual Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise between the U.S. and South Korea, which was shortened after President Donald Trump ordered a reduction in the drill's scale.
