SFI demands probe into death of 7-year-old Adivasi girl after medical camp; 20 children hospitalised.
The Student Federation of India (SFI) has called for a thorough investigation into the death of a seven-year-old Adivasi girl from Gollaguppa village in Andhra Pradesh, which borders Bhadrachalam in Telangana. The girl, identified as Madivi Jamuna, reportedly died hours after being administered a chloroquine tablet at a medical camp in Yetapaka mandal on Tuesday.
On Wednesday morning, an SFI delegation led by town committee secretary K. Ravinder visited several ailing Adivasi children from the same village who are currently undergoing treatment at the Government Area Hospital in Bhadrachalam. Around 20 children who reportedly fell ill after consuming the tablets have been admitted to the hospital, with their condition stated to be stable.
In a statement, Ravinder demanded immediate measures to ensure adequate health personnel and emergency medical care in the five Gram Panchayats adjoining Bhadrachalam, including Yetapaka. These panchayats were transferred to Andhra Pradesh under the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Act, 2014, creating administrative complexities that the SFI says must be resolved urgently to protect the health of residents in the border areas.
The SFI also urged the Andhra Pradesh government to provide an ex gratia payment of ₹10 lakh to the bereaved family of Jamuna.
