Indore Institute Launches BTech in Civil Engineering Taught in Hindi

Shri G S Institute of Technology and Science (SGSITS) in Indore has introduced a Hindi-medium BTech programme in Civil Engineering for the current academic session. The special batch offers 30 seats, and around 20 students have already enrolled.

The Madhya Pradesh government will provide a Rs 2 lakh incentive to each student in the programme during their final year.

The initiative aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) and aims to make technical education more accessible to students from Hindi-medium backgrounds. Sunil Ajmera, head of the civil engineering department, noted that many such students previously struggled with English-taught subjects, which sometimes led to dropouts. Under the new format, coursework and examinations will be conducted in Hindi.

Preparation for the programme has been underway for several years. Faculty members, including assistant professor Vivek Tiwari, have spent the last four years translating technical material into Hindi. The institute also conducted workshops to train teachers in delivering engineering lessons in Hindi.

Despite the Hindi-medium instruction, English proficiency remains a priority. Faculty will continue to help students strengthen their English skills, which are essential for higher studies and career growth. Student Rohit Sharma said learning in Hindi simplifies complex subjects, while teachers can still explain technical terms in English when needed.

The institute's approach aims to combine mother-tongue learning with the English competency required for professional success.
