Shakti Sharma Becomes First Woman Air Vice Marshal in IAF Non-Medical Branch

Air Vice Marshal Shakti Sharma has created history by becoming the first woman officer from the non-medical branch of the Indian Armed Forces to attain the rank of Air Vice Marshal. She has now assumed the role of Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Education) at Air Headquarters.

Commissioned into the Indian Air Force on June 18, 1994, Sharma has dedicated the majority of her career to the Education Branch. Her service has spanned various training institutions, air stations, command headquarters, and the Air Headquarters itself.

A key achievement during her career was her role in establishing the IAF Chairs of Excellence at IIT Kanpur and Pune University, strengthening the link between the armed forces and academic institutions.

Before this promotion, Sharma had already set a precedent by becoming the first woman officer from the three services to lead a Sainik School. She served as Principal of Sainik School Kapurthala, a residential institution focused on academics, discipline, and preparing students for defence careers.

In her new capacity, Sharma will oversee education and training-related activities within the Indian Air Force. Her appointment marks a significant milestone for women officers and reflects her extensive experience in military education and academic partnerships.
