Human Rights Commission Issues Notices Over Stray Dog Menace in Thiruvananthapuram

The State Human Rights Commission has registered a case over the growing stray dog menace in Thiruvananthapuram district and issued notices to two key authorities. Notices have gone to the Principal Secretary of the Local Self-Government department and the Secretary of the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation.

The Commission's action, taken by Chairperson Justice Alexander Thomas, follows a complaint from social activist P.K. Raju. The complaint was filed on the basis of media reports.

According to the complainant, stray dog attacks have made daily life difficult for residents across the district. The problem is not confined to the city Corporation area alone. It also affects the municipalities of Nedumangad, Varkala and Attingal, as well as several panchayats in the district.

The complainant further alleged that officials tasked with addressing the issue have failed to act, even as the number of stray dog hotspots has risen. The Commission has now sought responses from the authorities concerned.
