Landslide in North Sikkim Partially Blocks Teesta, Chyakoong Rivers

A landslide in the early hours of Sunday near the Naga Forest area in North Sikkim's Mangan district has partially blocked the flow of the Chyakoong and Teesta rivers. The incident occurred opposite the Theng Tunnel, leading to water accumulation in the affected stretch, though both rivers continue to flow.

Officials have confirmed that there is no immediate flood threat to downstream areas. Water levels at Sankalang and Phidang remain normal, though the water is muddy. Continuous monitoring is underway, and authorities have urged residents to remain calm and rely only on official updates.

The advisory comes amid heightened sensitivity following recent glacier-related incidents in Nepal and the 2023 Teesta flash flood. Officials noted that even minor or temporary river blockages can quickly trigger panic and speculation on social media.

Darjeeling MP Raju Bista said he spoke with Sikkim Chief Secretary Ravindra Telang about the landslide. Bista confirmed that the flow of the Teesta River remains normal at present, with no loss of life or injuries reported. He urged people living along the riverbanks to take precautionary steps and remain alert, noting that the region is receiving rainfall.

The Mangan District Administration has alerted vulnerable areas in the lower belt as a precautionary measure. Police and rescue personnel are monitoring the situation, and ground assessments at Chungthang and Theng have found the Teesta flow to be normal. Residents have been advised to avoid approaching the riverbanks in the affected stretch until the assessment is complete.
