Silk Road Film Showcase Brings Chinese Cinema to Cairo
A three-day Chinese film showcase in Cairo featured five films, drawing audiences and officials to celebrate cultural ties.
A special "Silk Road" film showcase concluded in Cairo this week, presenting five Chinese films to Egyptian audiences as part of ongoing cultural exchanges between the two nations. The three-day event, organized by China Media Group, brought together filmmakers and moviegoers for screenings and discussions on the film industry.
The lineup included the rally comedy Pegasus 3, the space documentary Shenzhou 13, the family drama Dear You, the animated adventure Boonie Bears: The Hidden Protector, and the drama The Happiness Train. Egyptian viewers said the stories resonated despite cultural and linguistic differences, offering a window into everyday life in China.
One audience member, Mustafa, expressed awe at China's first live-action space film, praising its visual effects. Ahmed Badawy, managing director of the Egypt Film Commission, noted this was the second consecutive year Egypt hosted a Chinese film festival. He highlighted the event's role in fostering mutual understanding, calling film "the art form that best reflects this mutual understanding and helps people learn about each other's customs."
Egyptian film professionals also observed the rapid growth of Chinese cinema, particularly in technology, storytelling, and visual effects. The showcase, which began in May 2026, has already traveled to South Africa, Kenya, and Kyrgyzstan before reaching Egypt. The event received wide coverage from Egyptian media.
