Sitharaman holds brief meeting with FATF chief on G20 sidelines

Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman held a brief meeting with Financial Action Task Force (FATF) President Giles Thompson on the sidelines of the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors (FMCBG) Meeting in Asheville, the Ministry of Finance said on Tuesday.
The ministry shared details of the interaction on X, describing it as a "brush-by meeting" between the minister and the FATF chief. No further details about the issues discussed during the meeting were disclosed.
The meeting is part of Sitharaman's broader engagements at the G20 gathering, where she has held several sideline interactions with senior officials and business leaders. Earlier, she met 3M Chairman and CEO William Brown, with talks focused on the company's India operations, including advanced manufacturing, technology, innovation, localisation, research and development, and local supply chains.
She also held a brief meeting with UK Chancellor of the Exchequer John Healey on the sidelines of the same event, though specifics of that discussion were not shared either.
The Asheville meetings are part of Sitharaman's official nine-day visit to Canada and the US, which began on August 25 and will conclude on September 2. The US leg of the visit started on August 28. She arrived at Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport in South Carolina, where she was received by India's Ambassador to the US, Vinay Mohan Kwatra.
Meanwhile, US goods and services trade with India totalled an estimated USD 239.6 billion in 2025, up 12.1 per cent from 2024. US goods exports to India stood at USD 45.4 billion, while imports from India were USD 103.8 billion, resulting in a goods trade deficit of USD 58.4 billion for the US.
