SLBC tunnel project to transform water security in south Telangana, says minister
Telangana minister says SLBC tunnel will end water crisis in Nalgonda; project set for June 2028 completion.
The Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) tunnel project is set to become a transformative solution for the water-scarce regions of south Telangana, particularly the former Nalgonda district, which has long battled the health crisis of fluoride contamination in groundwater.
Speaking at a public gathering in Nakrekal on Saturday to mark 1,000 days of the Congress government, Irrigation and Civil Supplies Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy reiterated the administration's commitment to completing the long-pending project despite execution challenges. He set a firm deadline of June 2028 for its completion.
The minister underscored that the tunnel's completion would fundamentally improve water availability across south Telangana, with special significance for Nalgonda, where generations have suffered from fluorosis—a debilitating condition caused by excessive fluoride in drinking water.
In response to persistent demands from local legislators, including Munugode MLA Komatireddy Rajagopal Reddy and Devarakonda MLA Balu Naik, Reddy announced that Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has sanctioned ₹1,800 crore for the Dindi irrigation project, with work already underway. He also assured that the Brahmana Vellemla project would be completed, alongside other long-pending irrigation schemes in the region.
