Sleep No More Shanghai Takes Final Bow After Decade-Long Run
Shanghai's immersive theatre landmark Sleep No More ends its 10-year residency, drawing 750,000 visitors and setting the stage for a Shenzhen adaptation.
After a decade of performances, the Shanghai production of Sleep No More has officially closed its doors. The immersive theatre experience, co-produced by SMG LIVE and its British partner, concluded its final show on Saturday evening, marking the end of a pioneering chapter in China's performing arts scene.
Over its 10-year residency, the production staged 2,670 performances and welcomed approximately 750,000 audience members. The show's unique format, which allows audiences to move freely through a multi-story hotel set and interact with performers, made it a landmark in Chinese theatre.
Audience reactions underscored the deep emotional connection the show fostered. One Shanghai regular, attending for the 66th time, noted that the immersive nature made each visit feel authentic and emotionally resonant. A visitor from the United States, who had seen the show in New York, praised its fame there. Another audience member, who flew in from overseas for the finale, revealed this was their 40th viewing, even booking a flight out at 12:45 a.m. after the show.
SMG LIVE Vice President Zhao Chenlin reflected on the production's legacy, stating that the experience gained over the past decade has created a replicable model for other cities. The company's next stop is Shenzhen, where they are already exploring local stories and elements to shape a new version. Zhao expressed confidence that the Shenzhen production will bring fresh surprises to audiences.
The closing ceremony was attended by cast, crew, and devoted fans, marking the end of an era for immersive theatre in Shanghai.
