Smart PNG meters to modernise Telangana's gas grid

Telangana to get smart PNG meters under a national rollout by PNGRB and EESL, improving safety and billing.

Telangana is set to be among the early beneficiaries of a nationwide programme to deploy smart domestic piped natural gas (PNG) meters. The initiative follows a memorandum of understanding signed between the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) and Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL).

The new-generation meters come equipped with digital monitoring, leak detection, tamper alerts, remote operation capabilities, and cybersecurity safeguards. These features are designed to strengthen consumer safety, improve billing accuracy, and boost the overall efficiency of gas distribution networks.

Under the arrangement, PNGRB will provide regulatory backing while EESL will bring its experience in executing large-scale smart metering projects. Consumers are expected to gain access to real-time consumption data, more precise bills, and enhanced safety mechanisms.

EESL Chief Executive Officer Akhilesh Kumar Dixit said the company will draw on its track record of managing more than 44.5 lakh smart electricity meters to support the gas meter rollout. The project marks a significant step in India's push to digitise utility infrastructure across states.
