Snoop Dogg says biopic lets him bring late mother and brother 'back to life'

Snoop Dogg has described the making of his upcoming biopic as an emotional experience, saying the film allows him to bring his late mother and brother "back to life."

The rapper spoke about the project during a recent conversation with singer Chaka Khan, joining her interview with People via FaceTime from the SiriusXM headquarters in New York City. Khan's new album, 'Chakzilla', features Snoop on the single "Boogie's in My Soul."

"I'm shooting my biopic right now," Snoop told Khan, who called the story a wonderful one and asked how the process made him feel. Snoop said the project has been an emotional journey that lets him revisit important relationships from his life.

"I get to bring my mother back to life. I get to bring my brother back to life. That's what I'm getting, that emotional uplift of bringing them back to life again," he said. Khan responded that the late family members remain with him.

Universal Pictures announced the biopic in 2022, with 'Black Panther' screenwriter Joe Robert Cole attached to the project. Titled 'Snoop', the film is being directed by Craig Brewer, known for films including 'Song Sung Blue'.

In June 2025, actor Jonathan Daviss was announced to portray Snoop Dogg in the film. Daviss has highlighted Snoop's involvement in the process, saying the rapper allowed him to spend time with him between auditions. He noted that biopics usually depict subjects who are no longer alive, making this an unusual opportunity to portray someone still living.

Actress Lauren London is set to play Snoop's mother, Beverly Tate, who died in October 2021 at the age of 70. Snoop's younger brother Bing Worthington, who was also involved in his career, died in 2024 at the age of 44. The actor who will portray him has not yet been announced.

The film is scheduled to premiere on August 6, 2027.
