Pit Bull Mauls Six-Month-Old in Sonipat, Baby Critical; CCTV Captures Attack

A six-month-old girl is battling for her life after being mauled by a pit bull in Sonipat, Haryana, in an attack captured on CCTV.

The footage shows the dog charging at a woman who was carrying the infant in her arms in Sikka Colony. The force of the lunge brought both of them down, after which the animal attacked the baby. The woman, the child's aunt, had taken her out for a walk when the dog suddenly ran towards them.

As she tried to shield the infant, the dog seized the baby in its jaws, causing her to fall to the ground. The child was dragged along the road as the dog refused to release her, even as others attempted to pull it away.

The baby sustained serious injuries and was referred to a hospital in Rohtak, where her condition is described as critical. Her family has not yet lodged a police complaint.

The incident has triggered panic among local residents, with questions being raised about the dog owner's negligence and whether rules for keeping such a ferocious breed were followed.

Pit bulls can be kept as pets in most parts of India, as there is no uniform nationwide ban. Some municipal authorities, however, have imposed local restrictions on ferocious breeds. In Ghaziabad and Chandigarh, for instance, pit bulls, rottweilers and certain other breeds cannot be kept as pets.

A similar attack last year in Delhi's Vinay Enclave left a six-year-old boy with severe injuries, including the loss of part of his right ear, after he was mauled by a pit bull. The dog's owner was subsequently arrested in an attempted murder case.
