South Korea to Brief Assembly on First Project Under $350 Billion US Investment Plan
South Korea's government will brief the National Assembly next week on the first project under its $350 billion US investment commitment.
South Korea's government is set to brief the National Assembly next week on the first investment project under its $350 billion commitment to the United States, with a closed-door session scheduled for Tuesday morning.
The industry ministry will hold the briefing at 9:30 a.m. local time (1330 GMT) for the Assembly's trade, industry, energy, SMEs and startups committee, according to officials cited by Yonhap News. A committee official said the session would present either the final outcome of negotiations or an interim report, depending on whether talks have concluded by then.
The briefing follows remarks on Thursday by Foreign Minister Cho Hyun, who said an announcement on Seoul's US investment plans under its trade deal with Washington had been delayed pending further talks. On Friday, Cho met US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington, where Seoul reaffirmed its investment pledges and the US emphasised the need for swift execution.
A government official said the key negotiating principle is that investments can only proceed when commercial viability is guaranteed. The two sides remain divided on the issue, which has complicated the negotiations. The official warned that if no agreement is reached, the talks could ultimately fall apart.
