Seoul Weighs Military and Other Options for Hormuz Shipping Safety

South Korea is actively examining a range of practical measures — potentially including military deployments — to help safeguard freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, according to a senior official at the presidential Blue House on Friday.

The official pushed back against suggestions that Seoul had offered no assistance on the matter, describing such claims as "not true." The remarks signal that the government is treating the security of the vital Gulf waterway with renewed seriousness.

While the official did not detail specific steps under consideration, the statement confirms that defence-related responses are part of the internal review. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments, and stability there carries direct implications for energy security and international trade.

Separately, the official noted that security consultations between South Korea and the United States are "not currently progressing." The two allies, however, continue to discuss a range of bilateral issues, with semiconductors emerging as one of the key topics on the agenda.
