Landslide in South Korea kills one as torrential rains lash south
Heavy rains triggered a fatal landslide in Geoje, South Korea, killing one and injuring three, with hundreds evacuated as rivers overflowed.
At least one person has died and three others were injured after a landslide struck a residential apartment building in Geoje, a coastal city in South Korea's South Gyeongsang province, on Monday. The landslide buried the building's first floor, prompting a rescue operation that pulled three residents from the debris. One of them was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
The incident unfolded as torrential rain swept across the country's southern regions, with some areas recording up to 800 millimetres (31.5 inches) of rainfall since Saturday, accompanied by thunder and lightning. The downpour caused rivers to overflow and roads to flood in Geoje, disrupting traffic and leaving residents stranded.
Authorities have evacuated around 100 residents from the area due to the risk of further landslides, while rescue teams were working to reach 20 others who remained stranded. The safety ministry confirmed the ongoing evacuation and rescue efforts in a statement on Monday.
The weather agency has issued heavy rain warnings for parts of the southern region as the deluge continues, raising concerns about additional landslides and flooding in the coming hours.
