South Korea's Lee to Address UN, Hold Mexico Summit With Sheinbaum

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung will travel to the United States and Mexico from September 21 to 27, his office said, combining a United Nations General Assembly appearance with a bilateral summit in Mexico City.

In New York, Lee is set to deliver a keynote address on Tuesday focused on reforming the United Nations, while setting out his vision for peace and coexistence on the Korean Peninsula. He is also scheduled to meet UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

On the sidelines of the UN gathering, Lee is pursuing meetings with the leaders of the United States, Australia and other countries. A possible encounter with US President Donald Trump comes as Seoul and Washington work through the details of South Korea's $350 billion investment package in the United States, agreed under a trade deal struck by the two allies last year. Officials said those talks are continuing, though Seoul postponed a parliamentary briefing on the plans that had been scheduled for last week.

Lee is due to arrive in Mexico City on Wednesday and hold a summit with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum the following day. The two leaders will then hold a joint press conference and preside over the signing of memorandums of understanding.

Seoul is looking to deepen cooperation with Mexico in trade, energy, aerospace and culture. Mexico is South Korea's largest market for K-pop, and Seoul also sees scope to expand defence cooperation as Mexico modernises its military.
