The SUV of a Samajwadi Party MP was damaged in a stone-pelting incident in Uttar Pradesh's Sant Kabir Nagar district, police said on Saturday.
The incident took place late on Friday night near Amardobha village, within the Bakhira police station area. According to police, Laxmikant alias Pappu Nishad, the SP MP from Sant Kabir Nagar, was on his way back after visiting a flood-affected area when the attack occurred.
People staging a protest by the roadside near Amardobha are alleged to have surrounded the MP's vehicle and pelted it with stones, shattering a window and causing damage. Police personnel intervened and escorted the MP to a safe location.
The incident unfolded amid a dispute linked to a Ganesh idol immersion procession. The altercation is said to have begun after police action against a DJ vehicle over loud music.
Sandeep Kumar Meena, Superintendent of Police of Sant Kabir Nagar, said a complaint had been received from the MP and that officers were working to identify those involved. He said action would be taken against anyone found guilty.
