Spain to Impose Border Checks on Italian Arrivals in Migration Standoff

Spain has announced it will introduce border controls on all flights and ships arriving from Italy, effective from midnight on Saturday and lasting until September 7. The move comes in response to similar measures imposed by Italy, which Madrid says are unjustified.

The Spanish government stated that passport, nationality, and visa checks will be conducted on Italian passengers and other travellers arriving from Italy. Officials cited "persistent irregular migratory pressure" from the country as the reason for the new controls.

Spain's decision follows a mass migration event on July 30, when around 72,000 people arrived at the Spanish enclave of Ceuta on the African coast. Italy had earlier introduced its own border controls on arrivals from Spain, citing security concerns related to that influx.

Earlier on Friday, the Italian government said it would not bow to "ultimatums or impositions" from Spain and would keep its controls in place until at least August 15. Rome said it would only reconsider its position once it was confident there were no security or terrorism risks, no new migration wave, and no irregular migrants moving toward European territory.

Spain had threatened reciprocal measures unless Italy lifted its controls by Sunday. The new Spanish checks will remain in effect while Italy maintains its own measures.
