Firefighters in Spain's eastern Valencia region are battling a violent wildfire that has forced the evacuation of more than 1,000 residents. The blaze, which ignited near the town of Segorbe late Thursday, is believed to have been sparked by a lightning strike.
The fire spread rapidly on Friday afternoon after a sudden shift in wind direction and speed. The changing conditions prompted authorities to order residents in the nearby town of Gatova to shelter in place before a full evacuation was announced. Local media reports indicate that many of the evacuees are concerned about the fate of their homes.
Emergency response teams have deployed aerial firefighting resources to combat the flames from above, while ground crews work to protect structures and contain the fire's advance. Personnel from Spain's Military Emergency Unit, along with fire departments from across the Valencia region, joined the initial response as conditions deteriorated.
Authorities raised the wildfire emergency to Level 2 on Friday, reflecting the severity of the situation. Firefighting operations continued through the night and into Saturday, with crews working to bring the blaze under control.
