Spider-Man: Brand New Day to Return to Theatres With New Footage

Tom Holland's Spider-Man: Brand New Day is set to return to theatres with new footage, a move that could help the Marvel-Sony blockbuster reach a box-office milestone that has never been achieved before. A release date for the re-release has not yet been announced.

The film, which opened in theatres on July 31, has grossed 2.49 billion USD at the domestic box office, placing it third on the all-time list. It trails only 2009's Avatar (2.92 billion USD) and 2019's Avengers: Endgame, while sitting ahead of 2022's Avatar: The Way of Water and 1994's Titanic.

The remaining target for the tentpole is to become the first film to cross $1 billion at the North American box office alone. Brand New Day currently stands at 950.6 million USD in the domestic market, a figure that would most likely fall short of the record without the planned re-release.

In India, the film delivered a record-breaking theatrical debut, surpassing Avengers: Endgame to post the biggest opening day for a non-Indian film to date. It collected Rs 72.44 crore on its first day, with nearly one million viewers attending screenings on its opening Thursday.

At PVR Inox, the sequel earned over Rs 135 crore during its opening weekend. Its four-day extended opening weekend across the country produced Rs 328.5 crore, and within four days of release it had become the fourth highest-grossing Hollywood film ever in the Indian market. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh noted that the film collected more than Rs 20 crore on Monday, August 3.

The story follows Holland's Peter Parker as he attempts to rebuild his life after a spell causes his friends and family to forget who he is. The cast also includes Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal, Jacob Batalon, Mark Ruffalo, Tramell Tillman and Florence Pugh. Destin Daniel Cretton directed the film from a screenplay by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers.
