Tribal body seeks quota hike, warns against political misuse of ST status
Left-affiliated tribal body demands higher ST quota and protection of classification from political manipulation.
The Adivasi Adhikar Rashtriya Manch, a Left-affiliated tribal organisation, concluded its national convention in New Delhi with a resolution outlining a comprehensive charter of demands concerning Scheduled Tribe (ST) rights.
The resolution calls for raising the existing reservation quota for ST communities, arguing that current levels are inadequate. It also urges that the process of ST classification be kept free from what it termed 'political manipulation', seeking to safeguard the integrity of the listing procedure.
Beyond reservation and classification, the charter spans four key areas: natural resources, education, employment, and cultural preservation. The organisation has pressed for stronger safeguards over tribal lands and forest resources, improved access to quality education, and assured job opportunities.
Cultural protection also features prominently, with the body demanding measures to prevent erosion of tribal identities and traditions. The convention serves as a platform to consolidate these demands ahead of any policy discussions at the central level.
