Zanskar Valley's Stanzin Tsangyang Becomes First Woman Officer From Kargil

In a historic milestone for the remote Zanskar valley in Ladakh, Officer Cadet (Women) Stanzin Tsangyang has become the first woman from Kargil district to be commissioned into the Indian Army. She achieved this feat at the passing-out parade held at the Officers Training Academy (OTA) in Chennai on September 5.

Tsangyang's journey is remarkable given her background. She hails from a family and community with no prior history of military service. Growing up amidst the towering mountains and harsh winters of Zanskar, she learned endurance and perseverance from an early age.

For her education, Tsangyang left home young, spending nearly fourteen years in a hostel at Lamdon Model School in Leh. Her academic performance earned her a scholarship, which enabled her to pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering at Tezpur University in Assam.

Her path to the armed forces began during her college years through the National Cadet Corps (NCC). It was here that she first learned about the various routes to becoming an Army officer and developed a strong desire to serve the nation.

The Indian Army Training Command noted that her dream of wearing the olive-green uniform was unprecedented for someone from her civilian background. The road was demanding, filled with challenges and moments of doubt, but the unwavering support of her parents, Tundup Tsering and Rigzin Ladol, and the resilience instilled by the mountains kept her moving forward.

Her parents travelled from Ladakh to Chennai to witness the historic moment as she stood on the parade ground, becoming the first officer from her family and community to don the uniform.
