October Streaming Lineup: 'East of Eden,' Quavo's New Album and 'Minecraft Dungeons II'

A seven-episode adaptation of John Steinbeck's 1952 novel “East of Eden” arrives on Netflix on Thursday, Oct. 1, with Florence Pugh starring as the charming and morally slippery Cathy Ames. Zoe Kazan, granddaughter of Elia Kazan, who directed the celebrated 1955 film version starring James Dean, wrote and executive produced the series. Christopher Abbott and Mike Faist play brothers Adam and Charles Trask, whose relationship fractures when Ames enters their lives. Kazan has said her version offers a fuller telling of the story than her grandfather's, including a deeper exploration of Pugh's character.

Also on the small screen, Catherine Zeta-Jones stars in and executive produces the AMC+ series “Kill Jackie,” debuting Friday, Oct. 2. The eight-episode thriller follows Jackie Price, a former international drug smuggler who spent two decades hiding in plain sight as an art dealer until she learns a crew of assassins has been hired to kill her. Adapted from Aidan Truhen's novel “The Price You Pay,” it comes from the creative team behind “Killing Eve.”

On Starz, also Friday, Alan Cumming and David Morrissey play neighbours of 15 years whose easy rapport turns hostile as rising bigotry seeps into their lives in “Tip Toe.” Russell T. Davies wrote all five episodes of the drama, which drew strong reviews when it aired in the UK earlier this year.

For horror fans, Tubi releases the anthology “Bite Size Terror” on Friday, Oct. 2, spotlighting emerging writers and directors across body horror, dark comedy and the supernatural. Episodes include “Kachina,” about an influencer who disturbs a family's sacred doll while redecorating a home, and “The Deep End,” about a babysitter who senses something wrong with a child after a pool trick.

In film, Jane Schoenbrun's “Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma” streams Friday on Mubi. The follow-up to 2024's “I Saw the TV Glow” premiered at Cannes and stars Hannah Einbinder as a filmmaker eager to revive a slasher franchise with its original star, played by Gillian Anderson. Amir Bar-Lev's documentary “The Last First: Winter K2,” out Friday on Apple TV, chronicles the first team of mountaineers to attempt a winter ascent of K2, in 2001, when temperatures at base camp can reach 50 below.

Music offerings include Wynonna Judd's first album in a decade, “The Hard Truth,” which she co-wrote and her husband, Cactus Moser, produced. “I've spent a lifetime singing about heartbreak, healing, faith, and survival, but I've never made a record like this one,” Judd wrote in July. Quavo also releases “QRÖMELIFE” on Friday, executive produced by Pharrell Williams.

Festival season continues with the Austin City Limits Festival, held over two consecutive weekends in the Texas capital from Friday. The first weekend, Oct. 2-4, will be livestreamed on Disney+ and Hulu.

In games, “Minecraft Dungeons II” launches Tuesday on Xbox X/S, PlayStation 5, Switch and PC, dropping blocky characters into a new dimension called the Sift, playable solo or with up to three friends. “Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve” arrives Friday on Xbox X/S, PlayStation 5 and PC, pitting players against an invasion of the Federation of Central Usea in the series' 30th-anniversary chapter.
