Student of the Year 3 to be a dark web series, not a film

SOTY 3 becomes a web series on JioHotstar, blending Class and Euphoria vibes.

The Student of the Year franchise is undergoing a significant transformation. The third installment, backed by Karan Johar's Dharmatic Entertainment, will not be a theatrical film like its predecessors but a web series slated for JioHotstar this year.

Sources indicate that the creative direction marks a sharp departure from the light-hearted, candyfloss tone of the 2012 original and its 2019 sequel. The new series is described as darker, edgier, and more intense, with a tone inspired by the privileged, high-pressure world of Netflix's Indian series Class and the provocative, emotionally turbulent style of HBO's Euphoria.

The project, directed by Reema Maya, is expected to explore complicated friendships and relationships within a high-stakes student environment. Reports suggest Shanaya Kapoor, who recently appeared in Tu Yaa Main, will play a double role. The working title may be Student of the Year 3 – After The Dark, though this has not been confirmed.

For context, the first film launched the careers of Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt, and Sidharth Malhotra, and was directed by Karan Johar himself. The sequel starred Tiger Shroff and introduced Ananya Panday and Tara Sutaria, with Punit Malhotra at the helm. The franchise's shift to streaming signals a bold new chapter for the property.
