Drone Attacks Kill Eight Civilians in Sudan's North Kordofan
Drone strikes in North Kordofan killed eight civilians and wounded dozens, with a second attack targeting rescuers.
At least eight civilians were killed and dozens more wounded in drone strikes in Sudan's North Kordofan state on Thursday, according to an independent rights group.
Emergency Lawyers, which documents atrocities in the country, said the first drone targeted a group of civilians traveling in the desert town of Sowdari. As people rushed to help the wounded, a second drone struck the area, the group reported.
In a statement posted on Facebook, the group said deliberately targeting civilians and then striking again during rescue efforts violates international humanitarian law and constitutes a war crime. It called for an independent investigation to determine responsibility.
Sudan has been engulfed in conflict since April 2023, when fighting broke out between the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces and the Sudanese military. The war has killed at least 59,000 people, according to the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data project, though aid groups say the true toll is likely far higher.
Drone warfare has become a defining feature of the conflict, with both sides using the weapons. The United Nations says drone strikes are now the leading cause of death in Sudan, accounting for 80% of civilian fatalities in the first four months of 2026.
