Kerala Sunni body asks critics not to interfere in religious matters
Kerala's Sunni Mahallu Federation has asked critics of religious scholars to avoid interference in religious matters, urging contextual understanding of rulings.
The Sunni Mahallu Federation (SMF), an affiliate of the Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama, has called on critics of religious scholars to refrain from interfering in religious affairs under the guise of women's freedom or liberalism.
At its State council meeting held in Chemmad on Wednesday, the organisation said every religion has its own set of laws, practices, and rituals. It noted that scholars issue rulings for believers who voluntarily follow them, and that such rulings are not imposed on those who do not subscribe to them.
The council urged people to interpret statements made by religious scholars in their proper context and meaning before levelling criticism. It also appealed to the media to exercise caution and responsibility while reporting or discussing religious matters.
The resolution comes amid criticism directed at senior Sunni leader Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliar over his recent remarks that women should not be allowed to mix freely with men during religious celebrations in public spaces.
SMF State treasurer Syed Abbasali Shihab Thangal, who also serves as the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) district president, inaugurated the meeting. State working president Bahaudheen Mohammed Nadwi presided over the session.
