Supreme Court to Hear Delhi Police Plea to Quash FIRs Against NEET Protesters

The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear on Tuesday (September 1, 2026) a plea by the Delhi Police seeking the quashing of 13 FIRs registered against students who took part in protests over the NEET paper leak. The police have also requested permission to register a fresh case against 2,873 individuals who were present during the stir, to investigate their alleged role in the violence.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta made an oral mention before a Bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant, urging the court to take up the matter at 2 p.m. The Delhi Police's application invokes the Supreme Court's plenary powers under Article 142 of the Constitution to quash the FIRs.

Mr. Mehta informed the Bench that similar applications have been filed by four other states — Bihar, Assam, Maharashtra, and West Bengal. He requested the Chief Justice to schedule the hearing so that records concerning all four applications could be considered alongside the Delhi Police plea.

The development comes amid a call by the CJP for a protest march in Delhi, accusing the Centre of failing to honour promises made on July 25 to end a 36-day agitation against examination irregularities. The march is planned for Teachers' Day (September 5, 2026) and would be led by families of students who died by suicide following the cancellation of the NEET exam and the subsequent re-test, as well as those allegedly subjected to police excesses during the July protests.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had constituted a high-powered enquiry committee headed by former judge Justice R. Subhash Reddy to probe issues including allegations of police excesses against students during the nationwide protests.
