SC Seeks Govt Response on IPS Officers in CAPFs, Flags Stifled Cadre

The Supreme Court has sought an explanation from the central government regarding the deputation of IPS officers into Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs). Hearing a matter, Justice Ujjal Bhuyan observed that cadre officers of the CAPFs are "completely stifled" due to the current arrangement.
The court's remarks come amid concerns that IPS officers occupying key positions in CAPFs may be blocking the career progression of officers from the forces' own cadre. The issue touches upon the broader question of leadership and promotion pathways within the paramilitary forces.
In response, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) informed the court that it has taken steps to implement the Supreme Court's earlier directions. The ministry stated that cadre reviews have been initiated across all CAPFs to address the concerns raised.
The matter is part of ongoing litigation over the composition and command structure of the CAPFs, which include the BSF, CRPF, ITBP, SSB, and CISF. The court's next hearing is expected to examine the progress of these reviews and the government's response.
