Supreme Court launches Hindi information service on Hindi Diwas

The Supreme Court on Monday announced the launch of "Jan Soochna Seva", a public information service in Hindi, coinciding with Hindi Diwas. The initiative is intended to make access to justice more inclusive.

Under the service, simplified Hindi summaries of selected significant judgments and orders will be made available. It will also offer Hindi audio and video bulletins running roughly 15 to 30 minutes.

The Court said the move is meant for the convenience of ordinary citizens, litigants and, in particular, persons with disabilities, so that they can readily follow important judgments, what they imply and the proceedings that follow, in a language familiar to them.

The stated objective is to widen access to justice and to connect the regard for Indian languages with the sharing of judicial information with the public. The use of simple language, together with audio and video formats, is expected to help those who find long legal documents difficult to read or understand.

The service will begin in Hindi, with work to be taken up soon to extend it to other Indian languages in a phased manner. The Court said this would allow citizens across the country's different linguistic regions to obtain concise, easy-to-understand information about significant Supreme Court judgments in their own languages.
