The Supreme Court has asked the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to examine the feasibility of installing CCTV cameras and setting up monitoring rooms at toll plazas across the country.
The direction came during proceedings in a suo motu case registered by the court following two separate road accidents in November 2025. The crashes occurred in Phalodi district of Rajasthan and Rangareddy district of Telangana, and together claimed 34 lives.
The court's intervention reflects growing concern over highway safety, particularly at points where vehicles slow down or queue up, such as toll collection booths. By suggesting surveillance infrastructure at these locations, the court appears to be pushing for better real-time oversight of traffic movement and quicker response to emergencies.
NHAI is now expected to consider the proposal and respond to the court's suggestion in subsequent hearings. The case continues to be monitored by the apex court as part of its broader effort to address systemic issues contributing to road fatalities on national highways.
