SC gives Rajpal Yadav final two weeks to deposit Rs 2 crore in cheque-bounce cases
The Supreme Court granted actor Rajpal Yadav a last chance to deposit Rs 2 crore and submit a payment plan in long-running cheque-bounce cases.
The Supreme Court on September 15, 2026 granted actor Rajpal Yadav a final two-week window to place a concrete proposal before it for clearing his outstanding dues in a series of cheque-bounce cases, while directing him to deposit Rs 2 crore with the court's registry.
A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant, and also comprising Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana, extended Yadav's exemption from surrendering until October 5, when the matter will next be heard.
The bench came down sharply on the actor over his failure to comply with earlier judicial directions, saying his conduct did not inspire confidence. "He is perfect at doing drama but this court. Earlier orders of the court have not been complied with," the bench observed, before deciding to give him one final opportunity to establish his bona fides.
Defence seeks time for payment roadmap
Appearing for Yadav, senior advocate PS Patwalia sought two weeks to present a detailed plan for clearing the dues and assured the court that the actor would deposit Rs 2 crore as a mark of good faith.
Patwalia told the bench that Yadav has already spent four-and-a-half months in prison in connection with the matter, and that he would need help from friends in the film industry to raise the money.
Senior advocate Ajit Sinha, appearing for the complainant, M/s Murali Projects Pvt Ltd, said the firm's principal concern was recovery of the defaulted amount. He submitted that Yadav had repeatedly failed to honour his financial commitments over the years.
How the dispute arose
The dispute traces back to financial assistance of Rs 5 crore that the complainant says was extended to Yadav for a film project in 2010. According to the complainant, Yadav issued seven cheques of Rs 1.05 crore each in 2013 as part of a settlement, all of which were subsequently dishonoured.
The complainant has further stated that under a 2012 agreement, Yadav, his wife Radha Rajpal Yadav and their company had agreed to repay approximately Rs 11 crore, inclusive of accumulated interest.
The court will take up the matter again on October 5.
