Overnight blaze hits Surat textile market, over a dozen shops damaged
A major fire at Surat's Shyam Sangini textile market damaged over a dozen shops and injured a firefighter before being controlled.
A significant fire broke out in a multi-storey textile market in Surat, Gujarat, in the early hours of Wednesday, causing extensive damage to multiple shops and injuring a firefighter. The incident occurred at the Shyam Sangini textile market around midnight, with the blaze affecting establishments on the sixth floor.
Chief Fire Officer Basant Pareek stated that a large-scale response was initiated, involving 25 firefighting vehicles, turntable ladders, hydraulic platforms, and nearly 150 fire personnel. The operation to bring the flames under control took between seven and eight hours.
During the firefighting efforts, one firefighter was injured and subsequently hospitalised after his condition worsened. Local traders reported that the fire initially consumed synthetic goods stored outside the shops on the sixth floor before spreading rapidly to several other establishments in the complex.
The exact cause of the fire and the full extent of the financial losses are yet to be determined. Authorities are continuing their assessment of the damage at the site.
