Sway DaSafo, rapper who won MOBO as an unsigned artist, dies at 44

British-Ghanaian rapper Sway DaSafo has died at the age of 44, a loss that removes one of the defining figures of independent British hip-hop.

The MOBO organisation was the first to announce his death, which was subsequently confirmed by his friend Kash Ahmad. According to Ahmad, the rapper died at his home in Ghana. No cause of death has been made public.

Born Derek Andrew Safo, Sway came out of north London and became a recognisable name in British rap during the 2000s, a period when the domestic scene was still carving out space beside the dominance of American hip-hop. He was a rapper, songwriter and actor.

His route into the industry was unusual. Rather than signing with a major label, he built his following through independently produced mixtapes — This Is My Promo Volumes 1 and 2 — sold at gigs, on the streets and through independent record shops.

That groundwork paid off in 2005, when he won Best Hip-Hop Act at the MOBO Awards while still unsigned. The victory, achieved before he had released a debut studio album, made him a symbol of how far an artist could go without major-label backing.

His debut album, This Is My Demo, followed in 2006 and earned a Mercury Prize nomination, cementing his place in the UK's emerging rap scene. He later reached a wider mainstream audience with the 2012 single Level Up, which became a top-10 hit in the UK.

Beyond music, Sway appeared in the television series Top Boy, extending a career that had already moved past recording and performing.

In 2010 he was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma and went into remission later that year.

His death was announced on 18 September, 2026. Tributes have begun to appear across the British music and entertainment community, with much of the attention on the path he helped open for independent UK rappers.
