Teen wielding sword kills one, injures two at Swedish school
An 18-year-old with a sword attacked a Swedish school, killing one and seriously injuring two others before being arrested.
A deadly attack unfolded at a school in central Sweden on Friday afternoon when an 18-year-old man entered the premises wielding a sword. Police confirmed one person was killed and at least two others were seriously injured in the incident at Brinell School in Fagersta, a town northwest of Stockholm.
Authorities received an alarm about ongoing deadly violence at 2:06 p.m. local time. Police Chief Tommy Alriksson said the first patrol arrived within minutes and confronted the suspect, who was subdued with live fire. The man was taken into custody, though it remains unclear whether he sustained injuries during the arrest.
Officers then swept the school to secure the premises. They discovered one person dead and confirmed no additional victims or perpetrators on site. The two seriously injured individuals are boys aged between 12 and 17, according to the Vastmanland County government.
The suspect was known to be connected to two local addresses, and investigators have already conducted searches at both locations. Police stated there is currently no reason to believe multiple attackers were involved.
The school, which typically houses 400 to 500 students, was in session at the time of the attack. A wide area around the campus was cordoned off, nearby schools were locked down, and roadblocks were set up as a precaution. A crisis center was established in a local sports hall to support those affected.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson expressed shock at the violence, which occurred "right after the summer break." In a social media post, he said the motive behind the act remains unknown but praised the intensive police response. An investigation is ongoing, with many witnesses expected to be interviewed.
