Taiwan Says It Is Watching Trump-Xi Talks, Stays in Close Touch With US

Taiwan's government said on Thursday that it is closely following the talks between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, and that it will keep up close contact with Washington.

Speaking at a press conference in Taipei, Premier's Office spokesperson Michelle Lee said the administration views the meeting between the two leaders positively, describing it as a contribution to regional stability and a way to reduce the potential risks of authoritarian expansion.

"The government has been closely monitoring the meetings between leaders from the United States and China," Lee said. "We continue to cooperate with the United States at all levels and maintain close contact with them to stay informed."

Lee added that Taipei has been in regular communication with U.S. officials and thanked Washington for its continued backing.

"The U.S. government has repeatedly reiterated its firm support for Taiwan, and we are grateful for the various levels of U.S. support for Taiwan," she said.

Taiwan is watching the summit closely as Washington and Beijing hold discussions covering trade and other issues, including Taiwan.
