Tamil Nadu CM Vijay Reviews Rollout of Breakfast Scheme Expansion for Classes VI to VIII

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay chaired a review meeting at the Secretariat in Chennai on Friday on preparations for expanding the Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Breakfast Scheme to students of Classes VI to VIII in government and government-aided schools.

The expansion is scheduled to be launched on September 22, with the Chief Minister set to roll it out at a school in Tiruvanmiyur in Chennai.

According to an official release, about 15.3 lakh additional students in 15,454 government and government-aided schools will be covered. An additional allocation of ₹217.63 crore has been made for the purpose in the current financial year.

The rollout will follow three delivery models. In 447 government and government-aided schools under the Greater Chennai Corporation, breakfast will be prepared and served through centralised kitchens. In 2,150 such schools in other municipal corporations, municipalities and adjoining town panchayat areas, centralised kitchens of the Directorate of Municipal Administration will handle preparation and serving.

In 12,857 government and government-aided schools in rural areas and adjoining town panchayat areas, members of self-help groups under the Tamil Nadu Corporation for Development of Women will prepare and serve breakfast at the schools themselves.

During the meeting, Mr. Vijay directed that kitchens be kept clean and hygienic and monitored continuously. He also instructed that all students be provided hot, tasty and nutritious food.

Ministers N. Anand, Rajmohan and K. Jagadeshwari, Chief Secretary M. Sai Kumar and senior officials were present.
