Tamil Nadu CM unveils ₹4,800-crore desalination plant plan for Minjur
CM Vijay proposes ₹4,800-crore, 400 MLD desalination plant at Minjur; also announces water, sewage and infrastructure projects worth over ₹2,000 crore.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Wednesday announced a proposal to build a desalination plant at Minjur with a daily capacity of 400 million litres. The project, estimated to cost ₹4,800 crore, is intended to secure drinking water supplies for North Chennai, Avadi, Ponneri and Minjur.
Making a suo motu statement in the Assembly, the Chief Minister also unveiled a ₹500-crore initiative to ensure round-the-clock water supply in the Avadi Municipal Corporation area. In a separate move, the capacity of the Kilpauk water treatment plant will be expanded at an outlay of ₹410 crore.
On the sanitation front, an underground sewage network will be developed for the Kundrathur and Nandivaram-Guduvancheri municipalities at a cost of ₹960 crore. The existing underground drainage system in Perambur, Kolathur, Villivakkam and Egmore in Chennai will also be upgraded with an investment of ₹236 crore.
Additionally, the Chief Minister set aside ₹100 crore for creating basic infrastructure — including roads, storm-water drains, streetlights, footpaths, solid-waste management facilities, playgrounds and community halls — in parts of Chennai that currently lack these amenities.
