Vijay Reviews Cooum Restoration Plan, Orders Phased Rollout
Tamil Nadu CM C. Joseph Vijay reviewed progress on the Cooum river restoration DPR, proposed facilities and global tenders, directing a phased, integrated approach.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay chaired a review meeting at the Secretariat in Chennai on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, focused on the preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the restoration of the Cooum river and development works along its course.
The meeting examined the status of the DPR and the facilities proposed under the project. It also took up the process of inviting global tenders, aimed at bringing international technical expertise and standards to the effort.
As a first step, a study was carried out to prepare a concept plan and an action plan for restoring and developing a three-kilometre stretch of the river. The plans envisage walkways, cycle tracks, viewing decks, green spaces and environmental improvement measures along this section, and the Chief Minister discussed them at the review.
Mr. Vijay directed officials to take the restoration project forward in multiple phases, following an integrated and sustainable approach.
The meeting was attended by Chief Secretary M. Sai Kumar; Additional Chief Secretary, Municipal Administration and Water Supply, Gagandeep Singh Bedi; Additional Chief Secretary, Finance, M.A. Siddique; and other officials.
