Tamil Nadu dengue cases fall for third straight year, deaths also down

Tamil Nadu has recorded a third consecutive annual decline in dengue cases, with 17,049 infections reported up to September 19, 2026, according to State Health and Family Welfare Department data.

The figure is lower than the 25,585 cases logged in 2025, 46,971 in 2024 and 56,863 in 2023. Reported cases dropped 17% between 2023 and 2024, and fell a further 46% in 2025.

Because the 2026 count covers only part of the year, it is not directly comparable with the full-year totals for earlier years, and the number could still change over the remaining months.

Dengue-related deaths have also declined. The State recorded nine deaths up to September 19, 2026, against 12 in 2025, 13 in 2024 and 12 in 2023.

The data offer an overview of the State's dengue burden and point to a sustained fall in reported cases and fatalities. They do not, however, establish what has driven the decline.

Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral infection that can cause high fever and body pain, and in some cases progress to severe disease. Warning signs such as persistent abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding and extreme weakness require prompt medical attention.

Continued surveillance and measures to control the Aedes mosquito, which transmits the virus, remain important for prevention.
