Tamil Nadu to conduct free DNA tests to identify flood victims in Nepal
Tamil Nadu arranges free DNA tests at three forensic labs for relatives of pilgrims missing in Nepal floods.
The Tamil Nadu government has announced free DNA testing for first-degree relatives of state residents who remain missing after severe flooding in Nepal. The initiative, confirmed on Thursday, is aimed at helping identify those who have not yet been traced.
Samples will be collected at forensic science laboratories in Chennai, Madurai, and Thanjavur. District collectors have been directed to coordinate with families and arrange for blood sample collection at the nearest regional centre, following standard operating procedures issued by the Nepalese authorities.
According to an official release, the state has been working closely with the Government of India and the Government of Nepal on rescue operations. As of September 2, 220 of the 305 pilgrims from Tamil Nadu had been rescued, while efforts to establish contact with the remaining 85 individuals are ongoing.
The government has also said it will assist relatives who wish to travel to Nepal, providing them with the necessary documentation and support. The DNA test results will be uploaded to the Government of Nepal's website to aid in the identification process.
