Tamil Nadu expands Kamarajar Breakfast Scheme to Classes VI to VIII

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Tuesday launched the expansion of the Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Breakfast Scheme to students of Classes VI to VIII in government and government-aided schools. The launch event was held at Gandhi Gramam Corporation School in Thiruvanmiyur, Chennai.

The Chief Minister shared a meal with students before going around the school's classrooms.

The widened programme is expected to reach about 15.3 lakh students across 15,454 government and government-aided schools in the State. To fund the expansion, an additional ₹217.63 crore has been allocated for the scheme during the current financial year.

Breakfast under the expanded scheme will be delivered through three different arrangements depending on location. In 447 government and government-aided schools within the Greater Chennai Corporation, meals will be prepared and served through centralised kitchens. A similar centralised-kitchen model, run by the Directorate of Municipal Administration, will cover 2,150 schools in other municipal corporations, municipalities and adjoining town panchayat areas.

In the remaining 12,857 schools in rural areas and adjoining town panchayat areas, breakfast will be prepared and served by members of self-help groups affiliated with the Tamil Nadu Corporation for Development of Women.
