Tamil Nadu clears land for new Assembly-Secretariat complex at Pattinapakkam
Tamil Nadu approves construction of a new Assembly-Secretariat complex at Pattinapakkam, Chennai, on 25.55 acres. PWD must submit a detailed project report within three months.
The Tamil Nadu government has formally issued an order granting in-principle approval for the construction of a new integrated complex to house the Legislative Assembly and Secretariat at Pattinapakkam (Foreshore Estate) in Chennai. The project will be developed on a total of 25.55 acres of land identified for the purpose.
The government has directed the Public Works Department (PWD) to prepare and submit a Detailed Project Report (DPR), complete with cost estimates, within a three-month timeframe.
The decision follows an announcement made by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay in the Assembly on September 3, outlining plans for a modern integrated Secretariat complex spanning 20 lakh square feet, with an estimated investment of ₹1,200 crore. The Assembly and Secretariat currently operate from the historic Fort St. George campus.
Land for the project has been pooled from multiple sources. This includes 21.76 acres under the Tamil Nadu Housing Board, 0.93 acres from the Greater Chennai Corporation, 1.73 acres of Revenue Department land, and 1.13 acres of Tamil Nadu Housing Board land currently in the possession of the State government. The identified parcels fall within Mylapore town.
To steer the project forward, the government has constituted three committees. These panels will handle the call for Expressions of Interest and selection of an architectural consultancy firm, as well as the preliminary and final design approvals for the building.
Necessary no-objection certificates for land use have already been secured from the Managing Director of the Tamil Nadu Housing Board, the Commissioner of the Greater Chennai Corporation, and the District Collector of Chennai.
