Tamil Nadu Unveils Olympic City and Motorsports Hub Plans for Chennai

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay announced a major sports infrastructure push in the state Assembly on Thursday, unveiling plans for a world-class Olympic City and a dedicated Motorsports City in Chennai.

The Olympic City, to be developed by the Tamil Nadu Sports Development Authority, will function as an integrated hub for athletes. It will include high-performance training centres, sports science and medicine facilities, and residential accommodation for sportspersons and coaches.

Vijay said the infrastructure would be built to Olympic standards, enabling Chennai to host international events while nurturing homegrown talent. The facility is designed to help Tamil Nadu athletes win more medals at the Olympics and other global competitions.

In a separate announcement, the Chief Minister said a Motorsports City will be established in Chennai to host Formula 1 through Formula 4 races. The initiative aims to identify young motorsport talent and provide training and racing opportunities to develop national and international-level champions.

Vijay noted that world-class racing arenas would open avenues for tourism, special vehicle manufacturing, employment, and broader economic development.

The announcement follows the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports creating a task force in June to monitor motorsports, with a stated goal of bringing Formula 1 racing back to India by 2028.
