Tamil Nadu Speaker urges self-restraint as live telecast puts House under public scrutiny

Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar on Monday emphasised the need for self-restraint and self-regulation among legislators, noting that the House proceedings are now broadcast live and closely watched by the public.

Recalling a recent interaction with a group of politically inclined youngsters in Dindigul, the Speaker said they had asked whether members could conduct themselves in a way that avoids remarks requiring expunction. He observed that people are ready to question the behaviour of legislators and see no reason why those who demean the dignity of the House should not be exposed.

"There will be no problem if members keep in mind the dignity of the House, their own dignity and the dignity of the voters who elected them," Mr. Prabhakar said, adding that he would decide on the matter after consulting members.

Earlier, DMK deputy leader K.N. Nehru drew the Speaker's attention to the circulation of expunged remarks on social media, reminding him of two notices submitted on the issue. The Speaker responded that elections to various committees, including the Privileges Committee, would be held next week and the matter would be referred to it.

Mr. Prabhakar also said he would not permit members to raise issues that were not brought to his notice before the session began, unless there was no Question Hour or calling attention motion. He explained that allowing such interventions could create a wrong impression that a Minister failed to answer effectively, causing embarrassment to the government.

He urged Ministers and departments to ensure that replies to members' questions are provided promptly.
