Tamil Nadu clears Water Metro study, three new Metro Rail corridors

The Tamil Nadu government has directed the preparation of a Detailed Feasibility Report (DFR) for a proposed Water Metro service connecting Chennai Central with Mamallapuram, located roughly 55 km south of the capital along the East Coast. In a parallel move, the administration has also ordered Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for three new Metro Rail corridors within the Chennai metropolitan region.

The announcements were made on Friday by Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Ramesh, who presented the demands for grants of the Special Initiatives Department in the Assembly on behalf of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, who holds the portfolio. The Minister confirmed that the orders were issued in June, shortly after the TVK-led government assumed office.

The three Metro Rail corridors for which DPRs have been ordered include a link between Siruseri SIPCOT II and the International Convention Centre at Muttukadu, a connection between Kilambakkam Bus Terminus and Chengalpattu, and a route from Wimco Nagar to Assisi Nagar. These projects are expected to enhance connectivity across key industrial, commercial, and suburban nodes in the region.
