Tamil scholar Pudhumanar, historian Venkatachalapathy honoured at Chennai ceremony
V. Padhumanar and A.R. Venkatachalapathy received awards from the Dr. U.Ve. Swaminatha Iyer Library at a Chennai event, where a book on Nannool was also released.
Eminent Tamil scholar V. Padhumanar and historian A.R. Venkatachalapathy were honoured with awards instituted by the Dr. U.Ve. Swaminatha Iyer Library, Chennai, at a function held at the Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) campus in Chennai on Tuesday.
Mr. Padhumanar received the Mahavidwan Meenakshi Sundaram Pillai Award for his contribution to the Tamil language, while Mr. Venkatachalapathy was presented the Dr. U.Ve. Swaminatha Iyer Award in recognition of his work in Tamil history and research.
Assembly Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar presented the awards, along with citations and cash prizes. The ceremony was attended by G. Viswanathan, chairman of the library and chancellor of VIT, and G.V. Selvam, vice-president of VIT.
At the event, Mr. Prabhakar also released a book on Nannool, a classical Tamil grammatical work. Mr. Selvam received the first copy.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Viswanathan urged political parties in Tamil Nadu to cooperate on matters of development, pointing to the political systems of the Nordic countries — Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden — as examples of parties working together on issues concerning national progress.
