Three Traffic Police Officers Killed in Northwest Pakistan Attack
Suspected militants killed three traffic police officers and wounded three people in an attack on a police vehicle in Tank district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Suspected militants on motorcycles opened fire on a vehicle carrying traffic police in northwestern Pakistan on Monday, killing three officers and wounding three other people before fleeing, police said.
The attack took place in Wazirabad Bazaar in Tank district, part of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, according to local police official Jamshed Khan.
No group immediately claimed responsibility for the shooting. Suspicion is nonetheless likely to fall on the Pakistani Taliban, known as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), a group that is separate from but allied with Afghanistan's Taliban, which returned to power in 2021.
The assault came two days after gunmen fired on an ambulance responding to a suicide bombing at a roadside police checkpoint in Dera Ismail Khan district. That bombing killed 12 people and wounded about 35 others, and the TTP claimed responsibility.
Pakistan's government has repeatedly accused Afghanistan's Taliban of allowing TTP militants to operate from Afghan territory and has demanded that Kabul prevent cross-border attacks. Afghan authorities deny allowing their territory to be used to attack other countries.
