Tanzania's First Gentleman Hafidh Ameir Hassan Dies in Zanzibar Hospital
Tanzania's First Gentleman, Hafidh Ameir Hassan, has died in a Zanzibar hospital while receiving treatment for a heart condition.
Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, has died. He passed away on Monday while receiving treatment at a hospital in Zanzibar, according to Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi, who announced the news and extended condolences to the family.
Mr. Hassan became Tanzania's first gentleman in 2021 when his wife assumed office as the country's first female president, following the death of President John Magufuli. He had been undergoing treatment for a heart condition.
Vice President Ndejembi stated that arrangements are being made for Mr. Hassan's burial in Zanzibar, the semiautonomous archipelago where the family has its roots. President Hassan is currently serving her second term after winning a disputed election in 2025 with over 97 percent of the vote, a poll in which candidates from the two main opposition parties were barred from running.
The couple leaves behind four children: three sons and a daughter who serves as a lawmaker. Regional leaders have offered their condolences, with Kenyan President William Ruto expressing sorrow on behalf of his government and people, noting that Tanzania has lost a distinguished son. Burundi's President Evariste Ndayishimiye also sent his sympathies to President Hassan and the people of Tanzania.
